Clean Compliance with the 44. BImSchV
Keep Your Boiler. Leave the Dust to Us.

What Changes in 2028?
From 1 January 2028, new dust emission requirements under Germany's 44th Federal Immission Control Ordinance (44. BImSchV) will apply to certain existing wood-fired and biomass heating systems. The ordinance regulates emissions from medium combustion plants and sets the corresponding emission limits.
*These limits apply to certain plants burning untreated natural wood, which may include Category A I waste wood under specific conditions. Different or additional requirements may apply to Category A II–A IV waste wood and other biomass fuels.
1 up to < 5 MW
The thermal input range in which the requirements are particularly relevant to wood-fired heating systems.
01.01.2028
The date on which the new requirements take effect for affected existing plants.
35 mg/m³
The general total dust emission limit for relevant existing plants below 5 MW burning untreated natural wood*.
50 mg/m³
Applies to certain existing plants below 5 MW burning untreated natural wood* that were already equipped with a filtration system or electrostatic precipitator on 20 June 2019.
6 Vol.-% O₂
The reference oxygen concentration used to express the emission limits.

Retrofit Instead of Replace
Not every existing wood-fired heating system needs to be replaced or retrofitted to comply with the new requirements. If your plant already meets the applicable dust emission limit, additional dust filtration measures may not be necessary. And even if emissions exceed the permitted level, replacing the entire boiler is not necessarily the answer. Where the existing boiler is still in good technical condition, retrofitting an electrostatic precipitator can offer a practical alternative. By integrating the dust collection system into the existing flue gas installation, particulate emissions can be reduced while retaining the existing heat generation equipment. The right solution depends on your plant's thermal input, current emission levels, configuration and available installation space.

With more than 20 years of experience in filtration technology, a dedicated service team and our own German subsidiary, we support our customers from initial planning through to ongoing operation.
Good to Know Before You Retrofit
Our electrostatic precipitators are generally suitable for retrofitting boilers from a wide range of manufacturers. The key factors are the plant's thermal input, flue gas routing, available installation space and existing configuration. We assess these conditions individually to identify a suitable solution.
The electrostatic precipitator is integrated into the existing flue gas system. Thanks to our modular design, we can adapt the filtration solution to the available space, including installations with limited room or challenging layouts.
Not necessarily. Our aim is to retain the existing heat generation equipment wherever technically feasible and add the dust collection system required. Any modifications depend on the specific installation and its technical requirements.
Details of the plant's rated thermal input, the fuel used, any existing dust collection equipment and recent emission measurements are particularly helpful. Photographs, technical drawings and information about the flue gas system can also support our initial assessment.
